look at this right here avatz … net change … to .
What Nuvi model would be the equivalent of the 500/510 for road use???
@flyurway The Aera 560 is comparable to the GPSMAP 496 but here are the differences. The 560s touchscreen is not quite as bright and sharp as the 496. This must have to do with the touchscreen technology in the display. It’s a difference but not a serious deterent to buying the 560. The 560s automotive mode is much better than the 496s auto mode. Two things the 496 can do that the 560 cant’…you can split the screen to have both moving map/HSI and the 496 has a marine mode for boating.
Nicely done! So how does this new “lightweight” compare technically with the older x96 series? For example, is there anything significant that, say, the 296 or 396 can do that one of these can’t? Or vice-versa? I’m thinking things like detail, features, processor speed, etc.
Thanks for doing this review.
Great video. A very honest and practical review. Really helped me isolate what GPS would be best for me.
How easy is it to select “Direct To” from a list of User Waypoints?
Can these units easily mark and name a User Waypoint?
Thanks for making it.
@meteorac The extra detail is about 10x better. If you are flying low and picking your way through mountain passes, good luck… I’d get the 550, the more information the better.
@popl222 The Garmin Aera units have all of the features of a Garmin Nuvi. You just have to switch modes from aviation to automotive. It has a database of all of the roads and points of interest for the entire US. If you buy the Atlantic International Version (European Database), it will have all of the roads for Europe. Call me if you have any questions…
@fxdwings I made the video using an Aera 560. The IFR Approach feature is the same in all of the models. The 500 is probably good enough for you, but if you are doing low level bush flying, you may want the better terrain resolution of the 550. Call me. 888-648-4016
So, does this thing have road maps too? You kept talking about using it in a car…
Is the 500 the gps he is using in the review? I like the ifr approach feature. Moving to alaska. Which would be best for me? Don’t really have the money for the weather function or use for the safe taxi. Thanks
with regard to terrain details, what are the major differences between the 500 and 550? what is the map accuracy for both units? i’m flying mainly vfr in a country where you need to fly exactly between reporting waypoints.
You can add a waypoint into the active flightplan. Call me and I will tell you how.

BEAU TRAVAIL BELLE DEMO
nice job
Great video, thanks for posting.
Thanks for a great demonstration on some of the basic functions. Looks like Garmin has another winner and I am amazed at the low price for such an amazing unit.
Super information on the 500 series, i think i’ll buy it.
Very helpful for the new user… or potential buyers… thank you for going to the effort.
